Chapter Seventeen
âHey,â David said the following morning as he wandered bleary-eyed from the hallway and stopped to look across the kitchen. âWhat smells so -â
Before he could finish, he saw something he hadn't seen in a very long time: Mia was cooking, managing several pans at once while also dealing with something in the oven and some toast set out on two plates. For a few seconds, David could only watch as she moved quickly from one task to the next, getting things done at lightning speed as the smell of frying eggs and bacon filled the room. She appeared to be nothing less than a multi-tasking domestic goddess.
âAm I still asleep?â he asked cautiously. âIs this all a dream?â
âTake a seat,â she replied, âbreakfast's almost ready.â
âBreakfast's usually some cereal and milk,â he pointed out cautiously, âand that's on a good day.â
âI'm fully aware,â she continued, âthat I haven't perhaps been the perfect wife lately. Believe me, I recognize the signs. It's not hard to see when a man isn't being supported at home, you can always see it in his eyes.â She turned and smiled at him. âYou work hard and you need my full support. I get that. We're a team and I need to pull my weight properly.â
âAre you trying to fatten me up for something?â he asked as he headed to the table and looked down to see Catherine sleeping happily in her crib. âIs -â
âShe's been fed and she's fine,â Mia told him. âToday's your day off, isn't it? I want you to have the most relaxing day possible, so that you're all fired up for when you get back to things tomorrow.â
âThat's... very nice of you,â he replied.
âLast night we reconnected,â she continued. âSeveral times, in fact. You've got to admit, it felt good, right?â
âIt felt amazing,â he said with a faint smile. âTo be honest, I'm still feeling a little tired. But you don't have to go to all this trouble, Mia. I don't want you wearing yourself out.â
âCooking breakfast is the least I can do,â she explained. âI don't know what you've got planned for the rest of the day, but Catherine and I are here and ready if you fancy spending time together. Or if you'd rather get on with some personal projects alone, that's fine too, I can take Catherine out for a stroll in her pram and let you have the entire house to yourself. All you have to do is tell me exactly what you'd prefer.â
âWho are you and what have you done with the real Mia?â he joked, before rubbing the back of his neck. âI think I want to do a little painting, but then this afternoon we could go for a walk. If we head down to the river, we could make it all the way to that little pub by the lock, and then if we time it right we could think about eating dinner there. I can even go online and book a table.
